From the ER to the court room, Arkansans are hurting. Medical bills and court costs trap thousands in debt cycles. 

Over the past three decades, the costs of living have been going up at a higher rate than our incomes. In 1985, an average income more than covered average household spending. These days? Not so much. Average housing, health insurance, transportation and college expenses together cost several thousand dollars MORE than median income. That means people are going into debt, just trying to pay their bills. 

Did you know that some 37% of Arkansans carry medical debt, and 20% have medical debt in collections? If you do, you are not alone.

Even if you don't have debt yourself, debt burdens affect us all because household financial insecurity affects cities and our communities. After an income disruption, financially insecure households are much more likely to:

• be evicted
• miss a housing payment
• miss a utility payment
